Spirulina…the superfood of the moment

Spirulina has been on the health scene for a while but suddenly seems to have appeared again all over the place.

So what is it and why should we use it?

It is a unique blue green algae that is rich in chlorophyll and many other nutrients.

Spirulina is full of amino acids, essential fatty acids and has over 100 vital nutrients. It is a great source of protein, amazingly high in protein, in fact.  It has a 60%-65% protein content. In comparison, meat and fish products are between 15% and 35% protein, and beans are about 6-11% protein. It is also a great source of iron and B-Vitamins. It is also great for boosting your immune system and can aid with liver cleansing.

Where does it originate from?

It has actually been around for ages. The Aztecs used Spirulina which they harvested in Mexico. It has also been a staple in the diet of the native people of Chad, Africa, where it was dried and used to make broth . Today it is sourced from around the world. There are farms in West Africa, Mexico, Myanmar, Thailand, California and even France!

Nowadays it is loved by experts and celebrities alike!

Spirulina is usually made by being dried or dehydrated and the water is then extracted into a powder or pressed. You can buy it in a powder or capsule form and it can be mixed with water, added to smoothies.
